So, you think your dog is a jerk

Whimsical Pup

Rover won't stop pulling on the leash. It is exhausting to have your arm nearly ripped out of socket on a daily basis. It is so frustrating to have to brace for impact when they see another dog on the walk. And squirrels, FORGET IT!

Want to know a secret as to why dogs hate the leash?

So, dogs are very nomadic in nature. While humans used to be, we aren't as much anymore. We are more about sedentary type things.

Dogs can be super far from us and still feel like we are buddies. Humans on the other hand, like to be near each other. When you go to a backyard BBQ you don't feel connected to Suzy who is on the opposite side of the yard.

Because being close doesn't suck to us, we do an awfully poor job of understanding it sucks to dogs. Dogs are faster than us, and they are fine being far apart.

So, when it comes to teaching leash skills we need to help dogs feel less crappy about the situation. We need to make it good. We need to keep their feelings in mind.

When we change our viewpoint and have a kind consideration toward the dog's feelings, we will get so much further in training.
